Humanity Reasons for Grass Fed Beef

Support Local Farming

Buying locally from small farms or farm-direct, builds a demand while improving a local economy.  Meat from hundreds, or even thousands of miles away that you find in the supermarket, is lining big business' pockets.  Smaller farms like ours are closer to the animals, seeing and working with them every day resulting in healthier and happier cows and better quality meat.

Sustainable Farming

Grass fed cows give back to the land on which they feed.  This provides a rotational, sustainable farming system that regenerates the soil for generations to come. It also increases the biodiversity of pasture ecosystems and improves quality of the pasture and reduces water runoff. Cows raised on pastures use far less fossil fuels since the cows harvest and fertilize the grass unlike grain fed, that require harvesting the grain, transporting, storing and then processing the feed.

Grass Fed Year Around

Cows are ruminants. This means that like deer, sheep and goats, they have multiple stomachs. They are built to eat and digest grasses. Through the natural fermentation of the grass in the stomach, cows are able to extract all the nutrients they need to grow. When cows are fed corn, they love it. It is an energy rich, sweet food but is no better for them than a diet of candy is for us. Their meat is not as dark, does not taste as good, and is not as good for us because they have not been eating their “vegetables”.

This decrease in nutrients means an increase in acidosis, liver abscesses, bloat, feedlot illnesses and hence medication.

Happier Cattle

Cattle raised on a pasture are calm and easy going. They learn to know the people caring for them, they are gentle and relaxed. They seldom get excited, fearful or stressed. The farmer can usually walk out in the field among them and they will follow him around, knowing that all is well. This results in more tender meat, fewer diseases and fewer pathogens that the processor must deal with. The meat from pasture raised cattle is more neutral pH, darker because it has more iron and minerals in the meat, is lower in water content and usually more tender.

Healthy Reasons for Grass Fed Beef

Hormone - Antibiotic Free

Grass fed and pasture raised cattle are not routinely given hormones or antibiotics. Avoiding low-grade, chronic antibiotic use in animal products is a huge leap in maintaining human gut health, as antibiotics kill your friendly gut bacteria. FDA Deputy Commissioner MichaeI Taylor said: "We think the science is very solid in showing that largely indiscriminate use of antibiotics contributes to resistance, I don't think there's really any question about it." Giving hormones to cattle to make them grow bigger and faster is one of the reason the European Union limits imports of US beef.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid

What’s so great about CLA?  CLA (conjugated linoleic acid ) has been shown to inhibit the development of cancer, prevent atherosclerosis and diabetes, and aid in weight management.  Conjugated linoleic acid has also been reported to modulate body composition by reducing the accumulation of adipose tissue in a variety of species including pigs, rats, mice, and now humans. The levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can be 2-3 times higher in grass fed beef than grain fed.

Beta Carotene - Antioxidants

Grass fed beef contains 6 to 7 times more beta-carotene than grain fed beef.  Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, which enhances the immune system, promotes eye health, improves lung function, better bone health, healthier reproduction and improved cell division and differentiation. Grass fed beef contains more precursors to help fight cancer.  It does it through the increased antioxidants such as glutathione, and superoxide dismutase, in grass fed beef compared to grain fed.

Essential Fatty Acids

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most ethnicities in the United States. Grass fed beef is 3x healthier for you.  Let us explain:  Grass fed beef has higher levels of alpha linolenic acid (omega 3) Omega 3s are anti-inflammatory essential fats which reduce; blood clotting, blood pressure, allergy response, & water and sodium retention. They are proven to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, diabetes, and they modulate gene expression. Omega 6, on the other hand, if consumed in higher amounts, has opposite effects.  Grass fed beef can have a 4:1 ratio (omega 6-3), compared to grain fed at 12:1!
